Clancy’s: From Topper Burgers to Turntables, an Indy Classic Reimagined

Indianapolis has no shortage of burger joints, but few carry the history — and forward-looking vision — of Clancy’s. What started in 1965 as a family-run hamburger spot has grown into a hospitality group that’s weaving nostalgia, comfort food, and new cultural concepts into Indy’s dining scene.

A Bite of Nostalgia at The Garage

My recent trip to The Garage Food Hall at Bottleworks reminded me why Clancy’s still matters. I ordered The Topper — Clancy’s double-deck burger stacked with beef patties, American cheese, shredded lettuce, sesame bun, and their own signature sauce. Think of it as Indy’s version of a Big Mac, only fresher, juicier, and a whole lot better. Add in golden crinkle-cut fries and you’ve got a meal that hits the sweet spot between comfort food and culinary craftsmanship.

Clancy’s stall at The Garage was one of the original vendors when the Bottleworks District opened, and it’s a fitting match: a brand with 60 years of history anchoring a food hall that celebrates Indy’s modern food culture.

The Clancy’s Hospitality Family

Today, Clancy’s Hospitality runs a diverse collection of restaurants across central Indiana:

  • Clancy’s Hamburgers – the classic burger concept.
  • Grindstone Public House and Grindstone on the Monon – neighborhood tavern staples.
  • Grindstone Charley’s – a longtime local chain.
  • Michaelangelo’s Italian Bistro – cozy, family-style Italian.
  • The Fountain Room – a stunning steak and seafood supper club at Bottleworks, recently named one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful Restaurants in America.

Together, these spots highlight just how far the Clancy’s name has come since its single-location beginnings in Noblesville.

What’s Next: The Pretender

Looking ahead, Clancy’s is stepping into a whole new lane with The Pretender, a listening-bar concept set to open in downtown Noblesville. Inspired by Japanese “kissa” lounges, The Pretender will feature vintage reel-to-reel machines, high-fidelity speakers, curated playlists, and a menu of craft cocktails and small plates. Think of it as part bar, part cultural experience — a place where music is as much a centerpiece as the drinks.

Slated to open in early 2026, The Pretender shows how Clancy’s is stretching its brand well beyond burgers, into experiential dining that connects food, atmosphere, and culture.

Why It Matters

Clancy’s story is more than just expansion — it’s about a legacy restaurant group reinventing itself for a new generation. On one hand, you’ve got that classic Topper burger and fries, the kind of comfort food that never goes out of style. On the other, you’ve got bold projects like The Fountain Room and The Pretender, which push Indy’s dining scene in new directions.

For Indy locals, that means we don’t have to choose between nostalgia and novelty. With Clancy’s, we get both.
