Bridging Divided Neighborhoods in Indianapolis
Over forty years ago, the construction of I-65 and I-70 severed the connection between the Indianapolis neighborhoods of Fletcher Place, Holy Rosary, Bates-Hendricks, and Fountain Square. Despite efforts to reconnect these communities, a significant gap remains where the highways intersect. This gap is the future site of “The Idle: A Point of View.”
Situated adjacent to the Cultural Trail and maintained by Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, The Idle aims to transform this space into a unique urban gathering spot. The design will feature re-purposed materials, providing a communal area that bridges the neighborhoods, fostering unity and collaboration among residents.
The Idle will not only serve as a physical connection but also as a symbol of the ongoing efforts to heal and bring together the communities that were once divided. With community support, this green space will become a vibrant part of the city’s cultural and social landscape, offering a place of reflection, interaction, and unity for all who visit.
